Benefits of Warrior III (Virabhadrasana III)

This is one of my favorite balancing poses. Not only are the benefits rewarding, but like many of the balancing poses in Yoga, it makes us stay in the PRESENT. When you’re in Warrior III, you don’t have time to think about that grocery list or what went on during the day, because if your concentration begins to wander off, guess what…..you’ll lose your balance. Just like in real life off the mat. If we keep our minds & bodies PRESENT, not worried or stuck in the past, or anxious about the future, we will always stay centered….in the NOW. At all times.

Some of the benefits of this amazing pose includes:

  • Strengthens your back, leg, shoulder & arm muscles
  • Strengthens your hamstrings & outer thighs
  • Expands your chest, lungs, & shoulders
  • Improves you memory & concentration
  • Improves your core awareness, posture, balance & coordination
  • Tones & invigorates your whole body
  • Builds core strength in your torso, abdomen, spine, & pelvic floor
  • Quiets your mind, calms your nervous system, & reduces anxiety
  • Stimulates your abdominal organs & digestion

Some cautions to consider before performing Warrior III:

  • High blood pressure
  • Recent or chronic foot, ankle, knee, leg, or hip problems
  • Recent or chronic lower back injuries
  • If you are pregnant, support the pose with the hands on a chair or some other support

Here’s a video to learn and to give you a visual about Warrior III,

Try it little by little, taking deep breaths all the way through. If you fall out of the pose, no worries…just keep trying. Enjoy! 😀 :
