New Moon + New Changes = New Beginnings

On the New Moon, Sunday March 30, 2014, I went from this:

To this:

Yes folks, I took the plunge and cut off my 9 year old locs! (dreadlocs) Through our times together, my locs and I have been through many, many stages of evolution, both emotional as well as spiritual.  The New Moon represents, starting over & new beginnings, and now was the  perfect time to release them and start a new hair chapter.

What are you gonna do now, you ask?

Well, I plan to enjoy taking only 2 mins. to wash my hair instead of 30, lol! And since summer’s coming, this would be a perfect time to not have a blanket of hair around my neck.

I DO plan to start another set of locs eventually, but for now, I’ll just let it grow out and enjoy my fro for awhile! Some people have asked me “OMG! Why did you cut off your hair??”

I say “Why not?” 😀

Moving on to bigger and better things…..

My happiest memory of all believe it or not….happened in my adulthood. Being a newly single mom, just getting out of a bad and abusive relationship, with now, not only myself to look after but 2 small kids in tow. Being very afraid of what the future may bring, very apprehensive and scared of moving on all alone…with no parents, grandparents and siblings to tag along to guide me, I knew in my own heart that this was a step I HAD to take…..a BIG one at that!

Taking my last public aid check in 1997 to purchase 3 one-way tickets on a Greyhound bus to my final destination…..Phoenix, AZ. Never once having been there before, or knowing anyone except for one person who moved there before me, yeah, for a then 27 year old with 2 kids, it was VERY scary!

Getting on that bus on that cool April night for me felt like the end but the beginning at the same time. Our lives, were changed forever that very moment….for the good! On that 2-day bus ride to Phoenix, with my kids and I all huddled together in 2 seats, watching the night sky, and it was the first time I actually got to see more stars in the sky because there was very little to no street lights on the road. I thought “Oh wow! I didn’t know such natural beauty was hidden from me for so long!” It was like something was telling me “You have never realized the beauty and strength that you have, the things that you’re capable of….but you will!:)”

Making our journey through Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas (Going through Texas was the loooongest ride ever! From Texarkana to El Paso took a day alone! **WHEW**), New Mexico, then……FINALLY….Arizona!

I have never seen mountains before except on tv, but when I saw those towering giants for the first time against the moonlit sky and the stars above, I shed such tears of joy! The beauty was overwhelming!

Finally we reached Phoenix, ready to start our new life! I’m always so humbled that I took that BIG leap, to live a better life, to learn how to find and love myself again, to have my kids raised in a healthier environment so that my daughter wouldn’t be raised with the idea that the only way someone loves you is if they put bruises on you, so that my son can know that it’s NOT ok to lash out in anger at someone…especially a woman, And to know how to treat a lady.

The new chapter is written…..the story continues….. 🙂
